Summer is just around the corner and a Maltese summer is nothing without village feasts and celebrations. With approximately 60 feasts in Malta, that mostly fall during the summer months, and another 20 feasts on the sister island of Gozo, there is always something to witness on the Maltese Islands.
The busiest period when it comes to village feasts starts at the end of May and goes on up to September. During this period, there is hardly any weekend that goes by without celebrating a village feast celebration. With Malta’s religious background, village feasts are incorporated according to the patron saint of that town or village.
Typical Maltese festas include fireworks, celebratory banners, papier mache statues raised on wooden columns and festoons to decorate the main streets. Everything is taken into full swing when the village inhabitants decorate their own balconies and rooftops with coloured festoons and flags according to the appropriate feast.
Most Maltese feasts last for around three days or more. Apart from religious ceremonies and processions, celebrations are in full swing. Traditional and fast food stands attract crowds, especially the typical nougat stands and other sweet delicacies.
The evening of the actual feast normal ends with a magnificent ground and aerial fireworks display in an explosion of colour, firecrackers and loud petards.
